# DSS-1 - Defensive Shotgun Shooting
Course Description:
This is an 8 hour introduction course which emphasizes the basics of defensive shotgun usage, and is designed to help the student develop confidence and control with the tools selected for personal defense.
Material Covered:
Safety review and briefing
Classroom presentation will cover nomenclature, operation, assembly/disassembly brief discussion on sight options, discussion of ammunition and accessories (slings, stocks, optic sights, side saddles).
Range training will cover stance, grip, functioning a long gun in residential setting, learning effective distances with respect to ammunition types. Administrative loading, prepping shotgun for use, carry positions. Shooting the shotgun from various positions.
Students will successfully complete a ten round qualification course of fire.

Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Hunter Safety Program or a firearm safety course.

Course Equipment Requirements:
A standard shotgun, or modern defensive shotgun (shotgun that is instructor approved for this program) with applicable maintenance kit.
Note: This is a defensive shotgun shooting class, field grade, break-action and or antique arms are not feasible and therefore not recommended. Pump or semi-auto shotguns highly recommended (typical: 12 ga, 20 ga, .410 or possibly 16 ga)
- 00 Buck – 25 rds
- Birdshot – 50 rds (#6 or #7½ or #8)

- Quantity of 4 correct gauge of dummy or snap cap (inert) ammunition
- Small pad or towel for extra shoulder cushioning
- Notebook/notepad and pen/pencil
- Eye and ear protection is required
- Baseball cap or brimmed hat
- Shirt with collar
- Sunscreen
- No sandals or open toe shoes
- Bring lunch, snacks and beverage(s) for hydration
- 100 rounds of shotgun ammunition consisting of:
- 00 Buck – 25 rds
- Birdshot – 50 rds (#6 or #7½ or #8)
