# BDHS - Basic Defensive Handgun Shooting

Course Description:
A two day (16 hr) inclusive program incorporating the legal aspects, the physical skills and the equipment needed to employ a handgun from a strong sided carry position. This is not a beginner's course. Students are expected to have safe gun handling and shooting skills.

Prerequisites:
NYS Pistol License
FITG Basic Handgun Shooting Fundamentals or equivalent NRA course

Safety review and briefing
Defensive ammunition
Elements of the draw and re-holstering
Reloading skills
Legal ramifications of self defense in NYS
Introduction to both dominant and support hand shooting
Introduction to dominant and support hand firearm manipulation
Shooting drills to reinforce classroom presentations
Successful completion of a 25 round qualifying course

Course Equipment Requirements: 

• Cartridge caliber: Service/duty caliber, pending instructor approval (.44 magnum loads are not recommended)
• Suitable defensive/duty strong side holster (instructor approved)
• Semi-auto pistols require a minimum of 3 magazines and suitable magazine pouch. Revolvers require the use of 2 speedloaders and suitable speedloader pouch
• Sturdy belt or duty belt for holster
• 300 rounds of ammunition required
• Suitable firearm cleaning kit
• Eye and ear protection is required
• Elbow and knee pads are recommended
• Notebook/notepad and pen/pencil
• Baseball cap or brimmed hat
• Shirt with collar
• Sunscreen
• No sandals or open toe shoes
• Bring lunch, snacks and beverage(s) for hydration
